Who we are, and who we aren't
Prep Not Panic is an independent UK website about household readiness: keeping a sensible cupboard, building a financial cushion, and having a body and skills that can cope with a bad week. It was founded in 2026 by Jon Blades, who runs a UK logistics company and a functional-fitness gym.
We are not affiliated with the UK Government. We quote official guidance — GOV.UK's Prepare campaign, the NHS, the Met Office, the Environment Agency, the Drinking Water Inspectorate — and we link to it, but nothing here is a government service.
Why the site exists
Preparedness has quietly gone mainstream in Britain. The government now asks every household to keep water, tinned food, a torch, a radio and a power bank. Most existing sites on the subject either shout about disasters or sell kit first and think second. We wanted the version a calm friend would write: plain, sourced, and honest about money.
The word "prepper" carries baggage, which is why we don't use it about our readers or ourselves. This is a site for normal households who would like a bad week to stay a bad week.
The three places
Everything on the site lives in one of three places. The Cupboard is what you keep. The Cushion is what you can absorb — money, paperwork, alerts. Capability is what you can do: physical readiness and practical skills. Capability is the pillar you won't find anywhere else, and it's written by people who lift and carry things for a living.
The Household Readiness Score
The Score is a free twelve-question self-check, scored against published standards, that takes about three minutes and shows your household's readiness out of 100 across the three places. No email address is needed to see a result. The full methodology is public.
What we will never do
- Use fear to sell anything, including attention.
- Run display adverts.
- Publish a number we can't source, or leave an error uncorrected.
- Recommend a product because someone paid us to.
- Look like the government.
How we earn money is set out plainly on its own page, and how we check facts on ours. The people behind pages are on the author pages.
